Prologue

“I want to name him Kado,” the woman said to her husband.

“That’s a beautiful name, Cheri. He is our little gift,” the husband said back and kissed the newborn baby boy on the forehead. “I promise to protect the both of you.”

“I know Dako. That is why I love you. But I fear that there is little that we can do in Chaositi. There has been countless kidnappings and violence ensuing in the past several months in addition to the natural disasters that continue to hurt our beloved peyi. I’m afraid the hope in this peyi is dying.”

“Then we shall leave the peyi. I will make arrangements immediately. I will go home

and get our other children ready, and we all shall leave within the month. I know someone who has connections to Mont City. I heard it is beautiful there, with buildings almost as high as our mountains and more importantly full of opportunity for growth, not just for Kado but for our other children as well.” Dako hugged his wife and child and before he left the room he said “all of my time and energy will be dedicated to this journey. I will not fail. Pray to Papa Tan for strength and guidance.

“Dako.” Tears fell down Cheri’s bony cheeks, but her eyes were filled with a firey determination. “I believe in you, I believe in us. And I shall pray constantly.”

Within a month’s time, Dako had made true on his promise. They had set sail from Chaositi to what their new home would be, Mont City. Kado’s three older siblings were Edtan who they would call Ed, the eldest brother. Minette, the eldest sister, and the youngest sister Dezyem who was nicknamed Dezy. Ed was glad there was finally another boy in the family that he can play with. Minette and Dezy was in awe at how small Kado was. Their mother Cheri did not let Kado out of her sight.

“How long until we arrive to Mont City,” Ed asked his father.

“We should be there by morning. Do you have the map I gave you?”

Ed ran into his cabin and came back with a clock. “Yes! I kept it in the trunk like you asked so it would not get damaged. Will Kado be getting a map of the world too?” (Map of Haiti on watch face)

“Good boy. And yes he will, in fact I’ve already made the prototype for him. It is in my case. All my children will receive maps so that they know how vast our world is. To know that we are limited by no land, but we should always remember our homeland-”

“-to know that our time here is limited, but the amount of time we can give is powerful beyond limits. I remember,” Edtan finished his father’s sentence.

Dako laughed, “I’m glad you remember son.” He pulled Edtan close to him as he watched the open sea. “All of you are very special to me. I pray constantly to Papa Tan for blessings for you all. I pray that one day we will return to Chaositi and it will not be under the same turmoil as it is now.”

“Why would Papa Tan let all this happen? Why can’t He just make the bad things go away?”

“There are several reasons. But I believe the main reason is that Papa Tan is shaping us to come back to be apart of his Sand again. He wants us to be free to choose our own path. He knows that adversity brings out the true nature in all things. Every path has some adversity, and if we pray to Him, He will gently guide us, but it is up to us to make the right or wrong choice.”

Edtan thought for a moment then spoke, “But if there were no adversity, could there be any wrong choices?”

Before Dako could respond they heard Kado crying at top of his baby lungs. “Go check on your mother, son. She must be tired. Get your sisters and watch over Kado so that your mother can get some rest. I will be there in a few minutes; I’m going to meet with the captain. We will continue our conversation another time.”

“Yessir!” Ed left to find his sisters and they all met in Cheri and Kado’s cabin. “Mummy, Da said you can rest. We will watch over Kado until he comes in.”

Cheri’s eyes were heavy with bags and her entire body except for the arm carrying the screaming Kado was limp with exhaustion. “Okay. Please be very careful with him. Remember he is a baby and not a toy.”

Minette stepped up to grab Kado from her mother’s arms. “I know mummy. Remember I helped care for Dezy when she was born too. We can do this mummy, please get some rest.” Cheri nodded and laid down on the bed almost instantly falling asleep. “Shhhh,” Minette rocked the crying Kado to soothe him.

“All that screaming is so annoying,” Dezy said.

“You know it wasn’t long ago when you were crying just as much,” Minette rebutted. “Go get his bottle. He’s probably hungry.” Dezy rolled her eyes and went to get the bottle. Minette put the bottle in Kado’s mouth but he spat it out and cried even louder. “Oh baby, what do you need? Ed, do you have any ideas?”

“Yes. I’ll be right back.” Ed left and came back with a small pocket watch, the prototype that his father had made for Kado. “Give him this.” The prototype’s casing was silver. The watch face was lined with gold and where the number 8 should’ve been was an hourglass with a little island and palm tree at the bottom. Kado’s name was engraved at the top beneath the 12.

Minette took the watch and dangled it over Kado from its chain. Almost immediately it caught his attention and he stopped crying. He reached for it and a smile formed on his face. He grabbed it, not fully in control over his body yet and flung it around. Ed and Dezy gathered around him and Minette playing and cooing him on.

From the doorway Dako watched over them without saying a word. He thought to himself, “This is the future. Our future. Thank you Cheri. Thank you Papa Tan. Thank you children.”

Kado turned into the alley with his camera on record. “1 man's junk is another man's treasure,” he said proudly. It was near sunset hour (a watch that only shows sunset and sunrise times.and the alley was dancing with shadows. He recorded in and around the trash collecting different scrap metals that he could find or other curious looking items that he could turn into map parts.“Inspiration comes from the strangest places,” he said to himself. Suddenly he heard voices around the corner. He crept deeper into the alley and peeked around the wall to see a group of men speaking. A few of them were armed with guns (the words of this page as a face) 2 of them in suits and the other 4 in regular clothes. All the numbers in this text will not be spelled out  (four=4)

Kado zoomed in on the group of men with his camera. He could just hear their voices. A familiar looking one in the group spoke, “the money’s all there, count it and see,” he passed a suitcase to the other man in a suit.

The man who received the suitcase’s suit was blue and all the hems were lined red. He crouched down and began counting the money. He signaled for his men to bringforward another suitcase.

“Pleasure doing business with you Mr. Monde. I hope everything you find is to your liking.”

“Of course. And one more thing Terry, that’s a fine timepiece you have there. Where’d you stumble upon that beauty,” the familiar looking man, Mr. Monde questioned. Almost immediately all of Terry’s men raised and pointed their guns at Mr. Monde.

“I dont care if you are the mayor of this city. You could be Papa Tan Himself, when you threaten my life you threaten your own,” Terry growled.

Mr. Monde laughed. “A man can admire a beautiful timepiece can he?”

“You just paid us to kidnap more makers and fixers,” Terry snapped,  “You know damn well where this watch came from.”

Mr. Monde threw his hands up in a shrug. In an instant all of the armed men had been shot and the only man left was Terry, the well dressed one. He tried to draw his own but was too late, he had been shot in the leg and fell to the ground. Blood drenched the man’s pantsuit.

          .       .      .

At the 2nd round of gunshot, Kado began running wildly in the opposite direction. He tripped over an empty can of soup, falling onto his camera. He quickly stumbled back up with the camera now tucked tightly under his arm. Fear pumped into his legs

         .       .       .

“Normally I wouldn’t share this information with anyone, but given the circumstances, I’m sure the information won’t leave this alley.” Mr. Monde slowly walked toward Terry. “The world, all of existence, relies on a balance of chaos and order. While chaos produces a lot of energy, it takes more energy to manage order. Hence, this complication will grant me the power to siphon and  control that energy.”

“Man, What,” Terry shouted. “I’ll kill you!”

“Do you know how we maintain peace in this city? Do you know what it takes to upkeep this beautiful city you call home? did you ever think to question why I had you to kidnap only makers and fixers. Without knowing my purpose why would you commit such a heinous act thinking you should be spared?” Mr. Monde stood above Terry as he struggled reaching for his gun again. Mr. Monde squatted in front of the desperate man pulling out a switchblade from his vest. He dug the blade into the back of the man’s hand and tore from his knuckle to his wrist. Terry screamed out in agony. “I thought to cut them but they serve me better working than removed from your body.” He grabbed the man’s other hand and cut him again.

“It takes energy to maintain peace and beauty. Power to be exact. An unbelievable amount of power. And you know what can get you power fast ? Money. You’re simply another criminal. So why wouldn’t I turn against you.”

A group of armed men came from all directions toward Mr. Monde and Terry. “Terry, no hard feelings. It’s just business. You are valuable to me. Also you makers and fixers are the only ones who can really stop me. Take him away to get patched up then bring him to the Movement.”

“You’ll pay for this!” The armed men placed a bag over Terry’s head and tied his hands together, the rope scraping the fresh wound on his hands.

“No, I almost paid. Fortunately, I can spend that money on something more important now. See you soon.”

One of the armed men approached Mr. Monde. “Sir, we have reason to believe there was someone watching. We’ve sent a team to follow. What do you want us to do with them when we find them?”

I’ll let you decide. I’m in a real good mood today. Things are falling into place. Kill him. Kill his whole family. Or don’t. It’s completely at your leisure.

““I hope the money’s all there… but I’m curious, what are you going to do with this complication,” one of the men in suits asked.

Kado’s steps struck the ground like a storm as he ran for his life. He strained to breathe as his legs muscles screamed reaching its limits, he was only running on fear and fumes. His chasers were the Time Force.
