Physical v. Digital !
I wanted to share something that I noticed throughout my journey as an artist.
When I self published Good Jeans & Brown Suga, at first a apart of me was self conscious about it. I had to do more marketing and sales which is something I shied away from. But over time I recognized that the time we’re living in, everything is pretty much digital. but nothing has propelled me further than having at least one physical copy of my book everywhere i go. (keep that thang on me ) to use as a portfolio to show my work…
ima be real, people will give me links and Instagram handles and i'll probably be on there for a second before i get distracted and never see their page again. but having something to manipulate in my hands creates more of a memorable experience than typing and swiping on my phone.
Suggestion! print out your work and keep copies on you when you visit any place. that’s not limited to visual art, poetry too ! or think about how to make your art something that someone can experience without having to pull their phone out. Music obviously is a bit different, but the idea is to provide a lasting experience. can you freestyle or do you have a verse memorized? Do you have an instrument? I'm not too versed in that space, but again the point is to fill a moment with as much awe and wonder that they want to contact you afterwards.
Final thoughts: for my visual artists specifically, keep a physical portfolio readily available at all times. I landed 2 exhibitions because I keep a copy of Good Jeans & Brown Suga in my car. And it doesn't need to be a whole book either. Put together a Zine or booklet with a few of your best work. maybe you can even sell them or pass them out for free. We are definitely in a digital age and it is important to keep up with the times, so have that digital file ready to airdrop or email too!
